Ports Inspection Directorate

The functions of the Ports Inspection Directorate are :

  • To regulate and control the importation of food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, chemicals, detergents, drinks and bottled water.
  • Screening of import documents before the issuance of pre-release stamps.
  • Bonding of unregistered NAFDAC regulated products for mandatory registration and release.
  • To undertake the inspection of imported food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, chemicals, detergents, drinks and bottled water at the ports of entry before release.
  • To undertake the inspection of imported food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, chemicals, detergents, drinks and bottled water at the ports of entry before release.
  • To control the exportation and issue quality certification (combined certificate of manufacture and free sales) of food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, chemicals, detergents, drinks and bottled water intended for export as well as issuance of Certificate of Pharmaceutical Products (COPP).
  • To compile standard specifications and guidelines for the importation and exportation of food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, chemicals, detergents, drinks and bottled water.
