Ban On Importation Of Various Brands Of Pie And Tart Shells From Canada

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been informed that the Bureau of Standards, Jamaica, on 2nd June, 2017 placed a ban on the importation of various brands of pie and tart shells produced by Harlan Bakeries, Edmonton, Canada following a recall alert issued on the product by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The recall of the products was due to E.coli 0121 contamination.

Food contaminated with E. coli 0121 may not look or smell spoiled but can be hazardous to health. Symptoms can include nausea, vomitting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhoea. In severe cases of illness, some people may have seizures or strokes, need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis or live with permanent kidney damage. Severe cases of illness, may result in death.

NAFDAC implores importers to ensure that they do not import the above products.

All outlets and consumers in possession of these contaminated products should immediately stop their sale and use and submit them to the nearest NAFDAC office for appropriate action.
