Meet the Director NCS, Dr. Rametu Omamegbe Momodu

Dr. Rametu Omamegbe Momodu, FPSN, FNIM, FPCPHARM, FNAPHARM

Dr. Rametu Omamegbe Momodu is a distinguished figure in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical and regulatory ecosystem, celebrated for her exceptional contributions to public health, regulatory innovation, and capacity building both nationally and internationally. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and a Ph.D. in Clinical Pharmacy. A Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (FPSN), the Nigerian Institute of Management (FNIM), the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (FPCPHARM), and the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy (FNAPHARM), Dr. Momodu also serves on the National Executive Council of the Board of Fellows (BOF) of the PSN.

Currently serving as the Director, Narcotic and Controlled Substances (NCS) Directorate of NAFDAC, Dr. Momodu provides visionary leadership in the regulation, control, and monitoring of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and precursor chemicals in Nigeria. Her mandate focuses on ensuring that controlled substances are available for legitimate medical and scientific use while preventing their diversion, misuse, and illicit trafficking.

Through her strategic direction, the Directorate has strengthened interagency collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Ministry of Health, and international partners such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). These partnerships have enhanced transparency, accountability, and the effective implementation of Nigeria’s obligations under global drug control conventions.

Before assuming her current role, Dr. Momodu served with distinction as Director, Veterinary Medicine and Allied Products (VMAP) Directorate, where she championed progressive reforms in veterinary drug regulation, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance, and pesticide management. Her leadership in VMAP fostered safer practices in the agricultural and food sectors, contributing significantly to national food safety and public health outcomes.

Her regulatory acumen also shone during her tenure as Director, Pharmacovigilance and Post-Marketing Surveillance, where she advanced proactive systems for the detection and mitigation of risks associated with pharmaceuticals and vaccines. Under her stewardship, NAFDAC’s Kaduna Laboratory Services Directorate received the Director-General’s Award for Outstanding Performance for two consecutive years for excellence in quality assurance and compliance with international standards.

Beyond regulation, Dr. Momodu is a passionate educator and mentor. She serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Abuja and the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists, nurturing the next generation of healthcare and regulatory professionals.

A certified Maxwell Leadership Team Member and recipient of the Empowerment of Women in Management certification from Denmark, Dr. Momodu is a committed advocate for women’s empowerment and leadership development. She mentors young professionals, guiding women to break barriers and lead with excellence. Her influence has earned her numerous recognitions, including Merit Awards from NAFDAC, the Lagos State Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), and the Association of Lady Pharmacists (ALPs).
