Public Alert No: 0020/2018 – European Union Food Safety Authority Issues Health Warnings On Green Tea Extracts

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been notified that European Union Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on 18TH April 2018, in Parma warned that consumption of green tea extract at or above 800 milligrams (800mg) per day can cause liver damage. Studies by EFSA revealed that there was no indication for liver injury for doses below 800mg per day. Meanwhile safe dose could not be identified. EFSA has called for further scientific trials on effect of green tea.

  • NAFDAC implores the general public to carefully read the product labels and ensure compliance with the recommended quantities.
  • Consumers are encouraged to report adverse event arising from consumption of green tea products to NAFDAC via pharmacovigilance @nafdac.gov.ng. or NAFDAC PRASCOR (20453 toll free from all network)
