The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been informed that the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has detected sulphur dioxide, an allergen, in samples of winter melon strips at levels exceeding the maximum limit for sulphur dioxide as stated in the Singapore Food Regulations. 2 SFA has directed 7 importers to recall the implicated products.
Excessive levels of sulphite in food could result in allergic reactions in individuals who are hypersensitive to sulphite.
Symptoms include hives, itchiness, stomach-ache, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Sulphite is commonly used as a food additive and is typically tested for as sulphur dioxide (a gaseous substance)

NAFDAC implores distributors, wholesalers, and retailers to immediately stop the distribution and sales of the Winter melon products.
Consumers who have purchased the implicated products should not consume the and Consumers who feel unwell may wish to seek medical attention.
Anyone in possession of the affected product should submit the affected product to nearest NAFDAC office.
Consumers are advised to report adverse events related to use of these products to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC PRASCOR (20543 TOLL FREE from all networks) or via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng
