World Food Safety Day (WFSD) 2025

NAFDAC JOINS THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL WELFARE (FMOH&SW) TO COMMEMORATES THE WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY 2025

The World Food Safety Day established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly during its 73rd session and adopted on December 20, 2018, is celebrated annually on June 7th, established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly during its 73rd session and adopted on December 20, 2018. The Food Agriculture and Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) were assigned the role to join efforts and assist countries to manage food safety risks along the food supply chain. This initiative provides a unique opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe food among the consumers and government agencies. Unsafe foods are those contaminated with various hazards such as bacteria, fungi, parasites or chemicals, and causes over 500 million people to fall ill globally each year. However, these illnesses can be prevented when we are informed and take appropriate action.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), through its Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN) Directorate joins the rest of the world to celebrate this year’s World Food Safety Day. The theme for this year is “Food Safety: Science in Action”. This theme emphasizes the critical role of science in ensuring food safety and guiding informed decisions throughout the food supply chain. Scientific research provides evidence for understanding food contamination and assessing health risks. Everyone involved in the food supply chain, from production to consumption, plays an important role in maintaining food safety. The message is clear: “Food safety is everyone’s business.”

The five calls to action for World Food Safety Day according to Codex Alimentarius Commission FAO/WHO are:

  1. Ensure it’s safe – Governments should invest in research and develop science-based policies to provide safe and nutritious food for everyone.
  2. Grow it safe – Agriculture and food producers need to educate and retrain employees on the latest food safety practices.
  3. 3. Keep it safe – Businesses must follow good hygienic practices to ensure the food they sell is safe.
  4. Know what’s safe – Consumers should practice safe food handling at home and report poor hygiene and misleading labeling.
  5. Team up for food safety –Individuals, organizations, and government agencies should work together to promote food safety through research, public displays, and community engagement initiatives.

HAPPY WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY 2025!!!
