World Food Safety Day (WFSD) 2025

NAFDAC JOINS THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL WELFARE (FMOH&SW) TO COMMEMORATES THE WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY 2025

The World Food Safety Day established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly during its 73rd session and adopted on December 20, 2018, is celebrated annually on June 7. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) were assigned the role to join efforts and assist countries to manage food safety risks along the food supply chain. This initiative provides a unique opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe food and inspire concrete actions to prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks. Globally, an estimated 600 million – almost 1 in 10 people – fall ill after eating contaminated food and 420,000 die every year.  However, these illnesses are preventable when we are informed and take appropriate action.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), through the Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN) Directorate, joins the rest of the world and the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare (FMOHSW) to celebrate the 2025 edition of World Food Safety Day. The theme for this year, Food Safety: science in action, highlights the critical role of science in ensuring safe food for all and guiding informed evidence-based decisions throughout the food supply chain. Scientific research provides the required evidence and basis for understanding food contamination, preventing foodborne illnesses, assessing health risks, cutting costs and saving lives. Everyone involved in the food supply chain, from production to consumption, plays an important role in food safety. The message is clear: food safety is everyone’s business.

The five calls to action from the Codex Alimentarius Commission (FAO/WHO) for 2025 World Food Safety Day are:

  1. Ensure it’s safe – Governments must ensure safe and nutritious food for all.
  2. Grow it safe – Agriculture and food producers need to adopt good practices.
  3. Keep it safe – Business operators must make sure food is safe.
  4. Know what’s safe – Consumers need to learn about safe and healthy food.
  5. Team up for food safety – Let’s work together for safe food and good health!

HAPPY WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY 2025!!! #WorldFoodSafetyDay
