Laboratory Services (LS-Kaduna) Directorate

OVERVIEW

The Kaduna Laboratory Services (KLS) Directorate of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is one of the seven official reference laboratories established to undertake quality control testing of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water, chemicals, and detergents submitted to the Agency for regulatory purposes such as licensing, market surveillance, enforcement, investigation, research and so on.

It provides these services for the thirteen states within the North West and North Central regions of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory.

The laboratory provides reliable and accurate analytical laboratory services in line with international best practices, demonstrated by its commitment to establishing and implementing Quality Systems in line with global standards.  The Laboratory has consistently sustained the ISO 17025:2017 Accreditation for almost a decade, exhibiting its technical competence in sixteen (16) accredited testing scopes.

KLS uses calibrated, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to undertake quality control activities to ensure the safety and quality of regulated products.. Some of the equipment include High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), Friability, Hardness and Dissolution Testers, Gas Chromatography, Karl Fischer Titrator, Kjeldahl, Polarimeter, Biosafety cabinets, Incubators, Colony counter, etc

LOCATION

KLS is strategically located in the heart of Kaduna city, at No. 1 Waff Road, adjacent to the Mogadishu Barracks. This central location ensures accessibility, security and efficient service delivery.

FUNCTIONS OF KADUNA LABORATORY SERVICES

KLS plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of products. The core functions and responsibilities of the Directorate include:

  • Laboratory Testing: KLS conducts comprehensive testing for product registration, investigation, and routine analyses of a wide range of regulated products, including drugs, food, pesticides, water, and cosmetics.
  • Quality and Safety Assessment: KLS evaluates and makes authoritative pronouncements on the quality and safety of registered products. This assessment is crucial to safeguarding public health by ensuring that products meet established standards.
  • Reference Laboratory for Government Agencies: KLS is a trusted reference laboratory for various government agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Services, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and other government entities. KLS provides accurate and reliable sample testing, analysis and pronouncements.
  • Analysis of Regulated Products for Enforcement and Investigation Purposes: KLS conducts thorough analyses of regulated products from the Investigation & Enforcement, Pharmacovigilance, Drug Evaluation and Research, and Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN) directorates, among others. These analyses support post-market surveillance and investigation efforts as required.
  • Analysis of Regulated Products for Export: The laboratory is responsible for analysing regulated products with the intention of export. Ensuring the quality and safety of products intended for international markets.
  • Training and Capacity Building: KLS actively contributes to the development of future professionals in the field. It provides hands-on capacity development for intern pharmacists and IT students, equipping them with practical knowledge and skills essential for their careers.
